Batman & Robin #10 – Review - by Grant Morrison (writer), Andy Clarke (pencils), Scott Hanna (inks), Alex Sinclair (colors), and Pat Brosseau (letters)
The Story: Batman and Robin search Wayne Manor for clues left by a lost-in-time Bruce Wayne.
What’s Good: Morrison’s series has been filled with a lot of wacky stuff, what with each arc thus far being somewhat independent. This issue [...]
|
Powers #3 – Review - by Brian Michael Bendis (writer), Michael Avon Oeming (art), Nick Filardi (colors), and Chris Eliopoulos (letters)
The Story: It’s a high-speed, super-powered chase as Walker and Sunrise try to get their murder suspect back to the station in one piece.
What’s Good: This is just a gorgeous display of sequential art at its finest. Not only is [...]

The Story: The Punisher and the Mennonite’s battle comes to its brutal end while Fisk and Rigoletto lock horns.

CBR Review: Red Robin, issue 10 - The second part of a crossover with "Batgirl" continues here, with explosions and butt-kicking (not necessarily in that order)
|
CBR Review: Batgirl, issue 8 - It was bound to happen. This "Batgirl" series hits its hiccup issue. Hopefully it doesn’t get derailed by it.
|
CBR Review: S.W.O.R.D., issue 5 - The story (and series) ends here with Earth about to be invaded and only Brand, Beast, and Death’s Head standing in the way.

CBR Review: The Unwritten, issue 11 - Who knew, all those complainers were right. A bad movie does hurt the original book after all.

CBR Review: The Twelve: Spearhead , issue 1 - “The Twelve” artist Chris Weston writes and draws this World War II tale featuring the Invaders.
|
CBR Review: X-Men Forever, issue 19 - An uneasy blend of backward-looking styles and forward plot momentum.
|
CBR Review: Justice League: The Rise and Fall Special, issue 1 - Green Arrow's actions in "Justice League: Cry for Justice" come to light here, and the reaction is just what you'd expect. After all, there wouldn't be much of a story otherwise, right?

CBR Review: Prelude to Deadpool Corps , issue 2 - The weekly run-up to “Deadpool Corps” continues with an issue spotlighting Kidpool and other child versions of X-characters.

|
CBR Review: Lockjaw and the Pet Avengers Unleashed , issue 1 - This comic has everything in it that you didn't know you were missing in comics – hippos, alligators, saber-toothed tigers, and Frog Thor! That's right, the Pet Avengers are back!

CBR Review: Wolverine Mr. X , issue 1 - Mr. X vs. Wolverine -- a whole lot of Wolverines -- and a strange twist near the end.

Comic Review: Green Hornet No. 1 - By Carlton Hargro
Green Hornet No. 1 Published by Dynamite Entertainment. Written by Kevin Smith. Breakdowns by Phil Hester. Pencils by Jonathan Lau. The Deal: Movie director and part-time comic book scribe Kevin Smith rolls out his brand-new version of the Green Hornet. This comic series is based on a screenplay written by Smith some time ago. The Good: Honestly, I've been a fan of the Green Hornet since watching him make a guest appearance on that classic Batman TV show years ago.

Comics that I hate - By Carlton Hargro
I was talking to a guy recently who doesn't read my weekly comic book review column or my blog on a regular basis and he (let's call him Dustin) remarked that I don't really write negative reviews about the comics I read. And, although I do slam books regularly, his words got me to thinking that maybe I don't write enough about the comics I actually don't like. That said, here's a list of comics I currently detest: Justice Society

Comic review: Siege No. 2 - By Carlton Hargro
Siege No. 2 Published by Marvel Comics. Written by Brian Michael Bendis. Pencils by Olivier Coipel. Inks by Mark Morales. The Deal: Marvel unveils the second issue of its latest blockbuster limited series, featuring a whole bunch of Avengers, Asgardians, and big-time super villains. The Good: I don't care what anybody says ... hate on Bendis all you want (he is widely criticized for his dialogue-heavy style), but this is a great comic book. It's a great Avengers story. As

Comic review: Stumptown No. 2 - By Carlton Hargro
Stumptown No. 2 Published by Oni Press. Written by Greg Rucka. Art by Matthew Southworth. The Deal: Oni pops out another issue of its new Greg Rucka-penned detective comic. The Good: I'm a sucker for detective comics, and Dex, the star of Stumptown, is a great new addition to the pantheon of private dicks populating popular fiction. Like many Rucka creations, she's a smart, yet flawed -- and sexually adventurous -- woman who's good at her job but sucky when

Comic Review: Orc Stain No. 1 - By Carlton Hargro
Orc Stain No. 1 Published by Image Comics. Written and illustrated by James Stokoe. The Deal: It's the first issue of writer/artist James Stokoe's new fantasy series about a cunning orc (you know, those creatures from sword-and-sorcery-type works of fiction?) who's better at stealing than fighting, trying to survive in a violent, blood-stained world. I think. The Good: This comic works from the first page, which quickly dives right into the action (à la the first Lord of the Rings

Comic review: Adventure Comics No. 6 - By Carlton Hargro
I got sad after reading the latest issue of DC's Adventure Comics. Sad because the creative team of writer Geoff Johns and artist Francis Manapul will soon leave the book -- along with the comic's star Superboy. I've really been digging what these guys have been doing with an otherwise lame character. I mean, think about it: Here's a hero who never really possessed much in the way of personality or unique traits -- and then, just when Johns was

Image Comics on a roll - By Carlton Hargro
Has anyone else noticed that Image Comics seems to be on a roll these days? The creator-centric comic company that was maligned in the past (like when it first launched in the 1990s) for churning out crappy and late comics has been, as of late, publishing some really great books. Honestly, I can't remember the last time I was reading so many Image books -- or the last time I actually got excited about the company's offerings. I mean, I

The Year in Review: Comic books - By Carlton Hargro
OK, 2009 is quickly coming to a close -- and as it does, every comic book geek is asking: "What were the best comics of the year?" Here's my take: Chew -- Definitely my favorite book of the year, this title has a great concept -- and it was executed with action, humor, smarts and a serious gross-out factor. Blackest Night -- Blackest Night -- not Final Crisis or Secret Invasion -- showed folks how a blockbuster "event" comic should

The ugly future in Sweet Tooth No. 4 - By Carlton Hargro
Sweet Tooth No. 4 Published by Vertigo (DC Comics). Story and art by Jeff Lemire. The Deal: Vertigo's tale of an animal-human hybrid making his way across a ravaged future version of America keeps on keeping on. The Good: You know, it's really easy to screw up a so-called "post apocalyptic" story. Honestly, those dour tales of fucked up futures are a dime a dozen. It takes a skilled creator to elevate that type of speculative fiction from cliché to

Image United No. 1 is pure schlock - By Carlton Hargro
Image United No. 1 Published by Image Comics. Written by Robert Kirkman. Art by Erik Larsen, Rob Liefeld, Todd McFarlane, Whilce Portacio, Marc Silvestri and Jim Valentino. The Deal: All the founding partners of Image Comics -- Erik Larsen, Rob Liefeld, Todd McFarlane, Whilce Portacio, Marc Silvestri and Jim Valentino (but not Jim Lee) -- unite for their own blockbuster limited series. The comic not only brings the creators and their most famous creations together, it also combines the collective
